5 Ways to Train Your Mind Into Developing a Morning Workout Routine

A morning workout is one of the best ways to start the day. It supercharges your body and gets your brain into gear for productivity, and you’ll get stronger over time.

But, it can be tough to develop a morning workout routine if you aren’t already in the habit.

Let’s break down five ways you can train your mind into developing a stellar morning workout routine:


5. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

First and foremost, you need to be getting a good night’s sleep if you want to have the energy to work out in the morning.

This means you need to:

  • Go to sleep at the same time every night
  • Put away your phone and other electronics some time beforehand – these can help you stay awake unnaturally
  • Sleep at least seven hours a night, and preferably eight

Your body uses sleep to regenerate and, crucially, to build more muscle, which will become more important as you continue with your morning workouts. Get a good night’s sleep and everything else will seem a lot easier.

4. Wake Up at a Consistent Time

Just like it’s important to go to sleep at the same time every night to train your brain, it’s crucial that you rise at the same time every day. This is easier said than done, and many of us have a hard time getting up before 7am. 

But the good news is that your body will eventually become used to any wake-up time you want. The key is consistency.

Try to get up at the same hour everyday and you’ll have enough time to do a morning workout without feeling crunched for time or that you have to cut your session short.

3. Set Out Your Workout Clothes the Night Before

If you’re like most of us, you feel pretty groggy when you first wake up. That can make decision-making impossible.

To make things easier on yourself, and to make sure you don’t quit your workout before you begin, put out your workout clothes on a chair or your bed the night before.

Then you can just rise and roll into your workout clothes without having to make any decisions. 

Do this, and you are more likely to actually continue with your workout you’ve technically already begun. 

Again, all of these habits are about minimizing the number of personal decisions you make so that it becomes automatic or routine. That’s the key to maintaining an excellent workout routine, not unlimited willpower.

2. Plan Your Exercises Ahead of Time


You should also try to plan your exercises ahead of time so you don’t hesitate or waste time thinking about what you want to do when you should be working out.

This is extra critical if you only have a narrow window of time in which to do a workout before you need to go to work or get started with your other daily obligations. 

Come up with a workout routine and maybe print it on the wall or put it on your desk. Then you can follow the routine to the letter.

1. Don’t Touch Your Phone or Other Distractions

Lastly, it may be tempting to roll over after waking up and scroll through social media for a few minutes. Don’t do this. This trains your brain to be lazy first thing in the morning.

In fact, avoid any distractions whatsoever and focus on completing your workout before you do anything else.
