5 Steps to Commit to Your Warrior’s New Year Resolutions

New Year’s Day is right there behind us. Now, for those sitting in the back row... This can only mean one thing: It’s resolution time again.

We’re planning on getting it right this year, and applying our toughened-up warrior attitude toward crushing our goals. Thought you might have what it takes to join us?

So instead of making some flimsy promises to yourself that you’ll forget about by next week, let’s set up this coming year to be our most beastly and successful yet.

We don’t need a crystal ball to predict that everyone is going to be flaking out around you, just like they do every year. Either they’ve aimed higher than they intended to strive for, or they just don’t want it bad enough.

The challenge for us now is to resist the temptation to tap out when we see everyone else tapering off in a few weeks. So how do you stay the course and keep your eye on the prize? It’s crucial to commit.

Here’s five vital steps to help you maintain your goals and keep powering through to your ultimate gains:

5. Define Your Goal in Detail

First, it’s a good idea to define your goal with as much specificity as possible.

If you outline everything about your New Year’s resolution to the smallest detail, it’ll be a lot harder to break and you’ll give yourself plenty of milestones to cross, boosting your motivation with each goal met.

For example, don’t set your goal to be something abstract and ambiguous like “get fit”...

Instead, try setting this goal with specific milestones or benchmarks like:

  • Bench press 100lbs by the end of January
  • Bench press 120lbs by the end of March
  • and so on...

4. At the Same Time, Keep Your Goals Realistic

Similarly, we’d recommend that you keep your goals realistic.

It does you no good to shoot for the stars and inevitably fall short, which can destroy your self-confidence and make it more difficult for you to commit to another New Year’s resolution next year.

For example, don’t make “become the world’s most famous actor” your New Year’s resolution. This is virtually impossible. A more manageable goal along the same lines could be, “move to LA and start taking acting classes”. That’s both achievable and realistic.

3. Tell Other People Your Goal

One of the best ways to make sure you stick with your New Year’s resolution is to tell other people about your goals and progress. It’s easy to get discouraged in the early weeks of January when progress might be a little thin or slow, but social power matters a lot.

However, if you tell other people about your New Year’s resolution ahead of time, they’ll catch up with you and ask how you’re doing.

Having an accountability partner creates a powerful psychological check-and-balance process. It’ll be more difficult to let go of your resolution and disappoint them, helping you get through some of the grindier weeks of the process.

2. Think Positively

Perhaps more than anything else, it’s important to think positively about your New Year’s resolution.

Try to focus on the goals or the benefits you get from fulfilling your resolution rather than the hard part or the frustration you might experience in the beginning.

For instance, if your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, focus as much as you can on how much better you’ll feel as you lose weight and how much more attractive you’ll look. Don’t think about how tired you are after the gym.

1. Be Patient About Your Progress

Lastly, remember to be patient with your progress. New Year’s resolutions are not meant to be completed within the first month of January (despite everyone attempting to finish them in that timeframe).

New Year’s resolutions are long-term goals designed to give your year structure and ambition. Follow your goal outline and enjoy progress where you get it, but remember to be patient and not give up.

The next step is up to you.

With these motivation-focusing strategies, you’ll have all the fortitude you need to power through an entire year of awesome achievements, seeing incredible strides in your mindset, physical strength and resilience.

Stay strong, warrior!
